Whitespace Is A Neat Note-Taking iPhone App With A Powerful Text Editor

Last month we covered an app named Grid that offered users a nice way of maintaining a scrapbook as well as a to-do list in one place. It is always nice to see such multipurpose apps, especially if they come with a clean UI and are easy to use. Whitespace is not quite similar to Grid, but you can place it in the same genre. The app is basically a text editor, but has the distinction of striking the perfect balance between being a simple note-taking app and having the features of a proper word processor. Whitespace lets you quickly jot down notes, but also has the option of attaching media files to each entry. This means that the app can also be used for purposes such as creating galleries out of the photos you already have on your iPhone. To make the app really great, there is a comprehensive tagging system that can be used to easily search through notes and arrange them into neat folders.

 
The folders that store your notes in Whitespace are named ‘Spaces’, and you can get started with the app by creating one. Just hit the ‘+’ icon in the bottom half of the main screen. The app automatically color-codes all the spaces you create for your convenience. If you are having trouble getting a grip on the app’s working, head to the settings section and read the content filed under ‘App Concept’. There are a couple of other useful options in the same menu as well, like specifying if you want to save the attached photos to the camera roll, or enabling the syntax highlighting mode.
 
To create a new note, simply enter a space you have created. An alternative way of going about this is to use the quick access bar at the top of the screen, where there are shortcuts for adding both text and photos. In the Whitespace editing screen, the keyboard comes with some really good text options. You can choose heading styles, add different variations to the text (like italicizing it, or enclosing it in quotes), or use the quick selection shortcut for easy editing.
In order to attach a photo to any of your notes, hit the clip icon above the keyboard. Photos and videos can be loaded from the camera roll or snapped right from within the app. There is no limit to the number of photos that can be attached with a note, so feel free to create entire galleries within each entry in Whitespace. The notes, complete with the attached files, can be shared via email or by exporting them to other apps.

Touch Image Manipulator Is A Great Photoshop-Like Photo Editor For iPad

Most people don’t like moving on to a new app, even if it offers better features, just because they are familiar with the former app’s options and usage. Touch Image Manipulator also comes with a full color pallet, and you can use any color from there before adding your personal artistic touch to a photo. The Fade option for brushes gives an even more realistic effect to your painting.
• Text: Long press the text icon in the side bar, and you will be met with an astoundingly comprehensive text editing menu. There are a lot of fonts available for users, and you can also align the text with complete ease in any way you want.
• Colors: As discussed earlier, Touch Image Manipulator has every color you can ever want. The available colors can be applied via brushes, or by using the Fill button offered by the app.
• Magnify: Although the app supports pinch-to-zoom, the magnify tool brings more sophistication and convenience to the whole process.

• Filters: The filters and photo effects offered by TIM are divided into 4 categories including Image, Color, Effects and Distortions. Each filter, listed under its respective category, shows a preview of its effect before you actually make any changes to the photo. All the popular filters are available in the app, including emboss, Gaussian blur, pixelate, etc.

NCPad Stretches iPad Banner Notifications To The Entire Width Of The Screen [Cydia]

Just a few days ago, we covered a tweak named Small Banners (review) that trimmed down the iOS notification banners to make everything look more compact. On an iPad, however, you might not need that functionality, owing to its bigger screen size. In fact, the situation gets completely reversed when it comes to an iPad. You might want bigger notifications on your iOS tablet, as the stock banner layout leaves room on either side of your screen, which might appear a bit crude to some users. NCPad rectifies this situation by changing the length of notification banners on your iPad to match the width of the screen (both in landscape and portrait modes). The height of the banners remains unchanged, but they are just enhanced in length. So, looking to optimize banner notification on iPad? Head past the break.

After you have installed NCPad on your jailbroken iPad, your notifications will be lengthened in size automatically, as there are no configuration options available for the tweak. NCPad doesn’t just increase the size of notification banners to add some empty space on both sides; the notifications will actually contain more data than they previously did. Everything about the tweak is optimized for the iPad, and you will feel like you are viewing stock notifications on your iPad, just better.

TenIconSwitcher: Expand Your iPad’s App Switcher Tray To Display 10 Icons [Cydia]

Many people think that the iPhone and iPad versions of iOS should have been more distinct than they currently are. This is owing to the fact that a lot of areas of the iPad don’t really look highly polished or tablet-optimized. Take a look at the App Switcher tray as an example. Apple did put the landscape mode for App Switcher in the iPad, but it is apparent that the space on each page of the tray could have been used more optimally. The icons in the App Switcher have got too much space between them, and that might seem like an annoying waste to some people. If you are one of these people, or just want to squeeze in some extra icons on each page of your jailbroken iPad’s task management tray, there’s now a tweak for that. TenIconSwitcher for iPad increases the number of apps on each page of the App Switcher tray from 7 to 10, and that, too, both in landscape and portrait orientations.

TenIconSwitcher for iPad is available from the BigBoss repo of the Cydia store as a free download. Once you have installed it to your iPad, the tweak will ask for a respring, after which your device’s App Switcher is altered automatically. There are no Springboard icons or Settings menu accompanying the tweak, and you have to do absolutely nothing in order to expand the tray’s capacity. However, as the tweak affects the App Switcher directly, all the apps previously present in the tray will be removed from there automatically after the installation of TenIconSwitcher.

The App Switcher tray’s new makeover looks better in landscape mode, as things get a bit too cluttered when you hold your iPad vertically. In any case, using TenIconSwitcher, you will be able to navigate between apps more efficiently and conveniently, and if you don’t like it, simply uninstall the tweak, as it won’t cost you anything.

SpotLock: Lock Your iPhone By Swiping To Spotlight Search Area [Cydia]

The Spotlight search area in iOS devices does have some fans, but many people simply don’t use it. This is apparent when you look at the number of Cydia tweaks that alter Spotlight search with some new functionality. Apart from those tweaks, there are a few that disable Spotlight search completely, butSpotLock is the first one that disables Spotlight while endowing it with a new use. Using SpotLock, you can lock your jailbroken iPhone simply by navigating to the Spotlight search area. By default, iDevices can only be locked using the hardware button designed for that purpose (other than the auto-lock), so SpotLock provides users with a software alternative for locking your device’s screen.

 

To get SpotLock, launch the Cydia store on your jailbroken iDevice and look for the tweak in the BigBoss repo. SpotLock can be downloaded for free, and once installed, disables the Spotlight search immediately. There are no new options added by the tweak to the stock Settings app, and any Springboard icon for SpotLock is missing as well. Just go to the first page of your Springboard once you have installed the tweak, and then swipe to the left of the screen. Your device will get locked automatically, and can be unlocked in the usual manner (using the unlock slider).

If you are a fan of the Spotlight search area in your iPhone, SpotLock is certainly not for you. Otherwise, the tweak provides a nice way of customizing your iDevice, and really has the “Wow” factor. On top of all that, the tweak is available for free, and you can uninstall it if you don’t like it or decide that it’s too inconvenient for everyday use.

Keep Your iPhone’s Lock Screen Wallpaper Visible Even While Charging [Cydia]

iOS blacks out the wallpaper as soon as you put your iPhone or iPad on charging. This is meant to be a feature that lets users distinguish between the charging and normal states at a glance. It might be a bit useful for some users, but most people might argue that the green battery icon is more than enough to alert you that your device is currently being charged. Also, the darkening of the background doesn’t look too good aesthetically, and that is precisely why ChargingBackground has been released in the Cydia store. If you have got this tweak installed on your jailbroken iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, the lockscreen wallpaper will always remain visible, even when you put the device on charging.

  

In our experience, ChargingBackground degrades the quality of the battery animation on your lockscreen to some extent, but that happens only on certain wallpapers and themes that clash with the colors in the battery image. Other than that, using the tweak is a treat. You just have to install it from the Cydia store, and it does everything else automatically. To see if ChargingBackground is working its magic, put your jailbroken iDevice on charging and take a look at the lockscreen. You are sure to notice that the black background behind the battery animation has been replaced by your usual lock screen wallpaper.

If you use the tweak wisely, it will certainly make your iPhone look better, although it is worth mentioning that ChargingBackground might not work on your jailbroken iPhone if you are using a Cydia theme on your device. So, if you love your device’s wallpapers enough to keep them even while charging, head to the BigBoss repo and grab ChargingBackground for free. The tweak does not have any configuration steps or customizable options, so don’t try looking for a Settings menu for it

ReconBot Turns Your iPhone Into A Spy Cam & Audio Recorder

You can use the camera on your smartphone in many ways, both appropriate and inappropriate; good and evil, if you may. The same holds true for ReconBot, an iPhone app that lets you play detective by secretly capturing videos and photos, recording audio and remotely streaming a photo feed captured by your device. The app comes with all the options necessary for a stealth camera; you can configure a trigger time for it, and when the capture starts, the screen will remain blank so that the target is not alerted. So, if you’re in the mood to give Mr. Bond a run for his money, or just want to keep an eye on your toddlers while you’re at work, , ReconBot is the app you need. More past the break.

 

Despite the app’s rather sophisticated functionality, using it is fairly easy. The app includes four modes of operation, discussed as follows:

• Remote View: This is, by far, the most useful mode in ReconBot. Using remote view, you can watch your iPhone’s live photo feed from anywhere. To configure this mode, swipe across the top bar on the app’s main screen until you reach remote view mode. If you want to schedule the capture for some later time, but are planning to place the device beforehand, enable trigger mode and then choose schedule as the trigger type. After that, it is possible to select the exact time you want ReconBot to start broadcasting its video feed. So, where exactly can you view the remote feed? To do that, hit the share viewing link button and you will get a link via email or SMS (your choice). Just put this link in any web browser, and you will start getting the live feed as soon as the broadcast starts.
• Video Capture: Pretty similar to the remote view, but instead of broadcasting live photo feeds, your phone will just record everything, letting you view it later.
• Audio Capture: This mode, when activated, sets the app to record sound discretely.
• Photo Capture: ReconBot lets its users capture images while displaying a blank screen. You can also add captions or notes to the media captured via the app. The app then lets you manage multiple captures easily, by sorting them into distinct case files.

 

Everything you capture via ReconBot is stored in the app’s own library only; it isn’t sent to the camera roll. You can protect ReconBot with a pattern lock to keep all your discretely acquired media out of the wrong hands. Media can be exported via iTunes, or emailed to anyone with complete ease. The limitations suffered by the app include the lack of front-facing camera support, and the inability to suppress incoming calls and other notification (don’t forget to put your phone in silent mode if you plan to use the app as a, well, spy camera).

AirAV: Stream Videos, Music & Photos From PC Or Mac To iPhone & iPad Over WiFi

Most iOS users aren’t particularly fond of iTunes, and no one likes going through too much trouble if they just want to transfer a single video from a PC to their iPhone. Fortunately, there are many apps in the App Store that let users stream content between their iOS and desktop devices over WiFi. AirAV is one such app. Not only does it let you stream media from your PC or Mac to your iPhone or iPad, it also supports WiFi file transfer for most formats. The biggest advantage of AirAV is its ease of use. You don’t have to go through a lot of configuration steps before getting to use it. Read on for details regarding this simple, but useful app.

 

Before you can start using the app, you have to enable DLNA on your PC or Mac. This depends upon the media server you intend to use. In most cases, you have to turn off your firewall, and enable the Allow Internet access to home media option in the player. If you are using Mac, it is better to use a third-party media player that has DLNA capabilities. Once the desktop-end is all set up, launch the AirAV app on your iPhone or iPad. Go to the Media Explorer section of the app, and if you configured everything correctly, your UPnP/DLNA media server should be visible there. Just tap its name to view a list of all the folders that have been synced with the server from your computer.

 

AirAV can basically stream images, videos and music. The file formats supported by the app are pretty vast in number. If both your devices are on the same WiFi network, you can begin streaming your computer’s videos or images simply by hitting any file in the displayed list. AirAV will let you sort the files on the basis of their names, date of creation, file format and a number of other criteria. The app even divides the media into different folders of its own accord, based on the keywords associated with them.

 

The image viewer in AirAV is pretty simple, with a couple of buttons for navigation. The music player, too, is pretty plain and resembles the stock Music app. The app supports almost all popular video formats, but for HD videos, the result might be a bit slow and laggy. You can rectify this issue by heading to the app’s settings menu and turning on the skip frame option. From the same settings menu, users can download files from their computer to their iDevice over WiFi. AirAV will provide you with an address that you can enter into your PC’s or Mac’s web browser to upload files to your phone.

AirAV is a nice app, one that you don’t come across everyday. It has quite a few customization options, is universal (optimized for both the iPhone & the iPad) and best of all, currently free for a limited time.

The Best Cydia Tweaks & Apps For Your Jailbroken iPad

Owners of A5 devices had been without a iOS 5.1.1 jailbreak for quite a long time, until Absinthe 2.0 finally came along. So, if you own a freshly jailbroken iPad (especially iPad 2 or the new iPad 3), you might be in need of a refresher course related to Cydia, and all the wonderful things it is capable of doing. Most of the tweaks available in the Cydia store work for iPad, despite being developed specifically for iPhone. However, there are some tweaks in the jailbreak store that are designed particularly keeping in mind the iPad’s larger screen real estate. Past the break, we have for you a list of some of the top tweaks of the genre.

TenIconSwitcher

The App Switcher tray is one of the most important parts of any iOS device, but on the iPad, it gives the impression that it could have been more well-optimized for the tablet’s bigger screen. TenIconSwitcher makes the task management tray just about perfect for the iPad, by increasing each App Switcher page’s capacity to 10 from the usual 7. The expansion of the iPad’s App Switcher tray remains valid in both landscape and portrait modes.

SplitMail

The iPad comes up with a pretty good split-screen view in the stock Mail app if you are holding your device in landscape orientation. For all the fans of that split-screen view, SplitMail is the perfect tweak to have on your iPad. With this tweak, the Mail app will always show the preview of each selected item in the right-hand pane of the screen, while listing the contents of your inbox (or the current folder) to the left, even in portrait mode! SplitMail is available as a free download in the BigBoss repo of the Cydia store, and is developed by the reputed developer Ryan Petrich.

CamSlideshow

When the first iPad was released, it lacked a camera, but things have come a long way since then. The new iPad (or the ‘iPad 3′) has got a pretty awesome 5 MP iSight camera that is capable of shooting some stunning images. That’s why CamSlideshow can prove to be a useful addition, as it allows you to quickly access the camera from the lock screen by tapping the slideshow button. SwipeSelection

iPad is just about perfect for note taking and editing tasks, thanks to its large keyboard and a pretty decent Notes app. SwipeSelection makes the whole iPad word-editing experience even better by adding gestures to the mix. The tweak makes sure that you don’t have to painstakingly select each alphabet if you want to edit a word. Just make a swipe in the appropriate direction on the keyboard itself, and the tweak will automatically select the desired text. NCPad

The notification banners always look a bit out-of-place and odd on an iPad, as they don’t cover the full width of the screen, giving the impression that they have been hastily ported to the iPad from the iPhone’s smaller screen. NCPad stretches all banner notifications to match the full width of your iPad’s screen. Not only does that make the banners look better, it allows you to view more information within notifications.

Overachiever

If you do a lot of gaming on your iPad, then you’re probably going to appreciate Overachiever. The tweak lets you unlock all Game Center achievements for any game! Read the full review of the tweak for further details.

XCon

xCon isn’t specifically optimized for the iPad, but is as useful for it as it is on an iPhone. The tweak lets its users run any app that usually refuses to work on all jailbroken devices (like DirecTV, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision, etc.). You can get a complete list of supported apps in our reviewof xCon. In case one of the supported apps gets an update that renders xCon useless for it, you will have to splash some cash (not much, just $2) and purchase xCon Alias from the ModMyi repo in the Cydia store, which should get things working again.

DisableLaunch

DisableLaunch really fortifies the security of your iPad. It gives you full control over your device’s privacy, and also incorporates gestures. The tweak allows you to lock your apps or make it impossible to delete them, with a single Activator gesture. We previously posted a review for the tweak, but since then, a pro version for DisableLaunch has been released, and later made free. DisableLaunch Pro is fully compatible with all (current) iPad models, and comes with quite a lot of privacy and gesture options.

Paid

Quasar

If any tweak deserves to carry a $9.99 price tag, it’s Quasar. After all, it changes the way you do everything on your iPad! Quasar runs all iPad apps as standalone windows. You can control each app window separately, maximize it to run the app in full screen mode (just the way iOS apps usually run), and rotate each window as well. The tweaks supports running multiple applications in distinct windows simultaneously, and you are likely to forget that your are using an iPad and not a computer. Quasar is available for download in the BigBoss repo.

FullScreen For IPad

Priced at $2.19, FullScreen for iPad makes the stock Safari app just about perfect. The tweak has two main tasks; it incorporates a full screen mode within Safari, and also comes with some really awesome gesture control options. The gestures can be personalized from the Settings app, and once configured, FullScreen makes sure that you never have to use any of the buttons available in Safari, as everything can be done via gestures! FullScreen for iPad can be downloaded from the BigBoss repo in the Cydia store.

LockInfo

If you don’t like to see all that wasted, empty space on your iPad’s lockscreen, give LockInfo a try. The tweak populates the lockscreen of an iPad with a lot of widgets rather than just the latest notifications. Using LockInfo, you can view your reminders, messages, calendar, mail and just about anything else you can possibly want on your lockscreen. In addition to all the widgets available for LockInfo in its Settings menu, you can add some third-party ones as well by searching through the Cydia store. LockInfo for iPad is available for $7.99 from the ModMyi repo in the Cydia store. If the price sounds a bit too steep to you, you can try the 14-day fully-functional trail for the tweak before making the purchase.

Springtomize 2

If there was to be declared a king of all customization tweaks for iOS, Springtomize 2 will easily annihilate all the competition. From lockscreen tweaks to Notification Center customization and icon revamping, Springtomize 2 has got it all covered. The tweak will let you alter the looks of your iPad in any way you want, and that, too, just for $2.99. Another good thing about Springtomize 2 is the convenience with which it makes all the cosmetic changes. In most menus of the tweak, you just have to hit a toggle or adjust a slider, and you are done.

 

Zephyr

Zephyr caused quite a stir when it was first released, but if you still don’t know what the famous tweak exactly does, read the tweak’s review we posted last year. In a nutshell, Zephyr makes iOS multitasking a whole lot cooler. You don’t have to rely on the App Switcher tray anymore if you have this tweak installed, and it certainly looks amazing on an iPad. Since we last reviewed Zephyr, the tweak has increased in price to $4.99, but that increase is accompanied by the addition of new gestures and customization options (you can now swipe upward to reveal the Springboard of your iPad, or navigate to the App Switcher using just an upward flick, rather than a four-fingered drag).

Honorable Mentions

There are some Cydia tweaks and apps that have been around for so long that people just tend to take them for granted. Nonetheless, their importance and usefulness is not diminished in any way.

Activator

Activator is a gesture-control platform for the entire OS, one that is used by many Cydia tweaks and apps as well, to provide the user with a quick way to control various aspects of the OS from anywhere within it. If you’re new to Activator, just try to count the tweaks and apps that rely on Activator gestures to know its importance.

RetinaPad & Fullforce

RetinaPad & Fullforce are must-have iPad-specific tweaks that enable Retina display for iPhone apps on Apple’s tablet that support it, and force them to switch to full screen mode, respectively.

IFile

iFile gives you access to the whole iOS file system (which makes it one of the ways to apply a number of iOS hacks to your device), and provides an extremely easy (and wireless) way of transferring all sorts of files to and from your iPad.

SBSettings

A customizable, skinnable utility that saves a lot of time with its plethora of shortcuts and toggles for various system settings, including WiFi, Bluetooth, Reboot and Respring, includes a task manager, integrates with the Notification Center and allows you to set a custom carrier name, among various other parameters.

Infinifolders

One of my personal favorites. Allows users to add as many apps to a folder as they want; a must-have option if you have a lot of apps of the same kind and hate arranging them into multiple folders, cluttering your home screen.

InifiniDock

As its name suggests, the concept behind this tweak is similar to that of Infinifolders, but it lets you add as many icons to the dock as you want. The tweak is particularly useful for the iPad, owing to its larger screen.

VLC Media Player

The popular media player that was taken off the App Store, now available only on the Cydia Store for jailbroken deviecs. Supports all (or most, anyway) media formats.

F.Lux

Acts as an intelligent eye-protector for you, changing the display temperature of your iPad according to the time of day, and setting a pleasant night filter on the screen each evening. You can read more about f.lux in our review of the Cydia tweak.

Winterboard

A popular themeing patform with countless downloadable themes for both the iPad & iPhone available on the Cydia Store.

Most of these tweaks are those that will optimize the way you use your iPad for routine tasks. Some of the paid entries in our list might look a bit too expensive; the reason they’ve been included in this list, is that they are worth the demanded price. There’s not much to talk about the app’s interface, really. The other main tab on the homescreen lists all the Cover photos that you’ve added to your Favorites list. Instead of listing each and every Cover photo that the app supports, all we can say is that there are some really high quality and diverse options to pick from.

To upload a photo to your Timeline, you’ll have to first authorize the app to access your Facebook account. Once past that, you can upload, like/dislike or bookmark a photo. Before uploading the photo, the app checks if the Timeline feature on your Facebook account is activated. If it is, the app uploads the selected photo to your Facebook’s Cover Photos album. As per the app’s instructions, all you need to do is hit the Jeego FB Covers album, select the required Cover photos and tada! Your Facebook Timeline has a brand new Cover photo! In case of a template, the app lets you fill the blank photo area with a freshly captured image, or a custom image stored on your device.

Even if the app somehow fails to change the Cover photo, it will, nevertheless, successfully update said album on your Facebook profile with the selected images, which you can then utilize from, say, the Facebook website on your desktop browser.
